Growing your own Food to Get Healthier

In this day and age food can be at our fingertips in no time with fast food restaurants, take out ordering, and food delivery services. Getting the food fast seems to be the way of life now days. We often wonder when we go out to eat how fast we will get served our meal seems to be the top priority. Secondary is how good the food will be and third will it satisfy us? It should be the slower we get served our food, the more time they are making it healthy and delicious. And their for the food will be good for us and very delightful to our taste buds. We will enjoy our meal very much because it's just what we want and need.

However, not too much thought goes into is the food homegrown or organic. Does the food come from the USA or other countries and how much of the food we get when we go out to eat now days is real food. It really makes you think when you have to ask yourself these questions. It sounds like a cartoon skit when you think about it being a real question now days. How dare they put fillers and chemicals in our food. Full of food colors and preservatives and who knows what else. Who gave them permission to substitute these things into our food line?

Trying to eat healthier is not a easy process these days. And I know their are people out their that want to be eating healthy foods but they just don't know how to go about getting it. The lack the understanding of what type of food is good and what is considered bad. They have no knowledge of what the harmful substances are that are in the very food they eat. They are uninformed as to what can help them live a better life by eating healthy foods. And I don't mean this in a way that people are stupid. People are very smart and quick witted. I mean this in a way that they just don't know better. Because the people in charge of our food in this country is sneaky by letting this happen in the USA.

We have to start caring about our own food intake and turning down the unhealthy foods and products we see. We have to avoid the artificial food and start replacing it with home grown foods. When we can find organic foods and products thats good too sometimes but we have to be careful there too. Not everything that reads organic is organic. But the more we know about this sabotage mess of our food supply, the more we can do to avoid it. The more action we can take to put in place real foods.

By growing our own food we can improve our health and our lifestyle. We can take the time to try to learn how to grow small batches of things at first. And then each year try to add to it and to learn all we can about growing food. Sure you will make mistakes as you develop your skills in growing food. But we all make mistakes and learn from them. I am still learning and I still make mistakes in growing and caring for plants. But each year gets more and more promising to have food to harvest.

Growing a garden doesn't happen over night and you have to work up to a full size garden. But little by little you can start to add more foods to grow as time goes on. And I know it is a lot for someone to take on, because having a garden is work. You have to pull weeds, stake the plants from falling over, fertilize the plants and feed and water them. You have to Plant the seed or starts in good well drained soil. Make sure the garden gets full sunlight and many more chores to go along with gardening. But I can tell you it gets better every year and the harvest gets greater and greater each year too. And when you start to reap the rewards of healthy growing and harvest season you will want to do more and more each year. And it is fun and soothing for the soul.

I can share with you how my growing process went for me in this location. We live on 20 acres in the sand dune. And we have brought in a lot of black dirt to grow a garden here. We first started out growing grapevines. We have a small vineyard of red and white grape. Then we put in a raised bed garden with black dirt on top of our sandy soil. And we used this garden area for years planting a garden almost every year. And harvesting many vegetables like, onions, tomato's peas, green beans, chives and many herbs. The herbs we use for cooking and also we make tea blends and enjoy the flavors. Drying the herbs and having the herbs on hand is a great reward to gardening. The medicinal benefits are well worth the hard work.

However you go about finding organic food or growing your own food I hope you will start to be mindful of what foods you choose to bring to your kitchen. Now is the best time to grow a garden and to start taking control of your food choices because you can have more control of your diet and health. I feel some starter vegetables and herbs would be a nice start for those of you who want to start growing a garden but don't know where to start. I would start with some vegetables like, carrots, radishes, onions, chives, and a couple of tomato plants. For herbs to start with would be mint, sage, rosemary, and parsley to enjoy the flavors and benefits.

Some of the things I like to grow and enjoy growing are grape to make wine and jams. I also love growing sage so I can use for tea and cooking and to burn around my home to cleans my areas. I really enjoy the smell of the spearmint and lavender that we grow. I use it around our home to freshen the rooms of my home. I hang spearmint from the shower head and enjoy the wonderful sent it brings to the room and breath in the smell. I have made little drawer fresheners with the lavender and rose petals. Adorable drawer sachets that are great gifts and a real treat to the freshness of your home. Another thing I like to bring indoors is pinecone that we have on our property. I add wick and wax to them to make great fire starters. There are so many things you can do with fresh produce and things when you grow things yourself.

When you take it slow and incorporate a few veggies or herbs at a time and ease into gardening it become very enjoyable. Don't stress yourself out trying to grow too many things at one time if your just starting out. Try your hand at it and give it a shot. You will be amazed at what you can do.
